Olympic Torch
Vita et Pax carries the Olympic Torch
On Friday the 6th October 2011 our school was chosen to represent Enfield in the handing over of the Olympic Torch to the London Boroughs. Some of the Year 5 and 6 were lucky enough to be involved.
Iain Baker, the Smarter Travel Officer for Enfield, met us at school with John Greatrex – keeper of the 1948 Olympic Torch and 1956 torch, who had with him the actual 1948 and 1956 Olympic Torches. The 1948 torch was from the London Olympics (which was recently auctioned for £35000) and the 1956 torch was from the Sydney Olympics. John lit the torches and with him we walked to Oakhill Park carrying them. Once we arrived at Oakhill Park we met Monkfrith School (who were representing Barnet) and the Mayor of Barnet.
After short speeches from the Mayor and John the torches were exchanged from Enfield to Barnet. All the children were then split up and took part in some mini Olympic activities. It was a wonderful experience for the children to see the actual torches and be part of history. All the children thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon out.
