Celebrating Deaf Awareness Week at Vita et Pax Preparatory School
This week at Vita et Pax Preparatory School in Enfield, we proudly marked Deaf Awareness Week, a meaningful part of our calendar that encourages empathy, education, and open-mindedness. Our pupils immersed themselves in a range of thoughtful and engaging activities to better understand the experiences of those who are deaf or hard of hearing.
As part of our commitment to nurturing compassionate, socially aware young learners, each class spent time learning about the challenges faced by members of the deaf community. The children reflected on the importance of inclusive communication and considered how small actions—like making eye contact, speaking clearly, or using visual cues—can make a big difference in helping everyone feel heard and valued.
A huge thank you goes to Aston, who kindly shared his personal journey as a deaf individual. His visit sparked brilliant questions and heartfelt conversations, helping pupils gain a richer and more human understanding of deafness beyond what’s written in textbooks. Aston’s courage and openness inspired many, and we are grateful for the time he spent with us.
One of the most popular parts of the week was our British Sign Language (BSL) workshops. Children enthusiastically learned to sign common phrases, greetings, and even how to spell their own names. For many, this was their first introduction to BSL, and they embraced it with excitement and determination. It was truly inspiring to watch our pupils supporting one another and taking such pride in learning a new way to communicate.
At Vita et Pax, we believe in celebrating diversity and creating a school environment where every voice is valued—even those expressed through signs rather than speech. Rooted in strong family values, our school community in North London continues to champion empathy, respect, and the power of learning through connection.
We are so proud of how our children responded to Deaf Awareness Week—with thoughtfulness, kindness, and a willingness to learn.
